Music for a Break

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Hey! Having listened to so many prog CDs, I don’t know for some reason I wanted to have a bit of change in the kind of music I spun. First, I found an MP3 CD of CAKE. Well, I don;t know much - or at all - about this band. But I do like the I WILL SURVIVE track which the band plays nicely. So I kept playing this track.
After that I wanted to have something rockin’ … so I played ANGEL’s debut album. Oh man … I love this album. It blasts off with adrenalin exploder track titled TOWER with pulsating keyboard punch plus dazzling drum. The music moves like a thunderstorm. It’s kicking man …!!! I then enjoy my favorite track of this debut album, LONG TIME. Wonderful track! Beautifully composed.

And now … I’m playing Jean Michelle Jarre "Rendezvous" ….

Well friends … BE READY for the Second Out Jamming Session of i-Rock! which will be held on 14 July 2006, ROMEO Cafe, 20:00 - 24:00.
BE THERE … or … DIE!!!! Don’t ever think that you are Too Old To Rock ‘n’ Roll, Too Young To Die like what Ian Anderson of TULL said …. See ya …!!!

JRENG!
Rock On!!!!!

Cabaret Symphonic Prog Rock - a true masterpiece album!

Who say prog music must be dark? Well, some people do. The darker  the music, it’s
much moreAct_last_epic prog  – so they say. But A.C.T. has proved the other spectrum in which
their music – most of them are upbeat and in a fast tempo – gives a humorous nuance
even without having to know the lyrics. Funny, but it’s very enjoyable and I started to
love the band. When I look deeper in greater details on their music, it’s composed
neatly with an excellent melody and top notch arrangements. On the basis of tight and
neat composition, the musicians deliver their contribution flawlessly. This is my only CD
of the band. Previously I made a review of their debut album Today’s Report on a loan
basis from my prog mate’s CD collection. I loved the music that’s why I purchased this
album from local music store where I was very fortunate that it was available down
here in Jakarta for USD 19.10. Is it expensive? I don’t know. It’s worth the investment
because I got great music! Well, Jakarta is not bad for CD availability hah? I think so.
At least there are many prog stuffs down here and of course … many prog lovers.
Unfortunately, very few prog bands that DARE to come here. They are so concerned
about ridiculous Travel Warning issued by their Government. Come on proggers ….
Don’t let your fear overwhelm you, show your progness by coming to my country …!!!
(BTW, every month there always be one BOYS BAND coming here. Last week there
were 300 jazz artists came here to do CHARITY concert. Where are you
proGGers?????). I invite proggers all over the world to do a serious meeting deciding to
do a concert here. We have a great promoter down here. Don’t worry …. OK? Email me
now!

Back to Last Epic of A.C.T. , the following is my view. I am doing this with a labor of
love because the music is damn GREAAAAAATTTTTT ….!!! (sorry, I’m not
exaggerating. I urge you not to read this long and boring review,
just GET THE CD MAN! You won’t regret! Satisfaction guaranteed.).

Intro as the name implies, it sets the opening theme for the album.
It comprises a real orchestra arrangement in an overture style. Nice.

Wailings from a Building blasts the music off with a fast tempo intro
using keyboard solo as the lead, accompanied with a guitar rhythm, bass and drums
performed in fast speed but it does not like a typical power metal rhythm. It’s really cool
intro, I would say. The music suddenly turns into quieter passage when the vocal starts
to join the music. “No, it cannot be the morning light…”. What’s so unique is the music
riffs that accompany the first singing part – it’s a very neatly arranged violin / cello
combined with keyboard. It reminds me to prog metal music but it’s not that heavy. Oh
man … it’s a wonderful arrangement. For me personally, I never found this kind of
music before. It sounds funny but amazing!!! The vocal is so powerful. During the
interlude part, guitar does a stunning solo with no distortion at all. Well, everything in
this track has been neatly arranged! Am speechless man ….

Mr. Landlord starts off with a humorous style lyrical part “You
better honour him, don’t jeopardize your stay. Put on that perfect smile and start
sucking up! Hey! Mr. Lanlord , nice to see you again …” in relatively medium-fast
tempo. WHOAAAA … man … what a great opening part. The song flows dynamically
with great variations of high and low points singing style by the lead vocalist. Violin /
cello plays beautifully during musical transitions. Guitar solo plays shortly with great
melodies. It sounds like a cabaret symphonic prog rock music, I would say. Is there any
kind of that sub-genre? I don’t know ….

Torn by a Phrase - oh my GOD! This track is really killing me now.
The intro is so catchy. It starts off with soft and inventive guitar riffs (oops!! Do not
imagine that this is something like a prog met riffs man, it’s so cool and soft). The
keyboard sound enriches nicely with a beautiful repeated chords. When vocal starts
entering the music, acoustic guitar and violin / cello plays beautiful music at the
background.  During the singing part, the music plays beautiful chords in a riffs mode.
There is also a beautiful transition with classical touch and improvisations by multi
instrument. Well, ACT music is so unique and I would say that it’s very hard to classify
their music. It’s an ACT music. Probably it’s not a derivative one.

Ted’s Ballad begins with a violin / cello sound that brings the vocal
to start mellow, in a very melodic way, accompanied with beautiful piano sound in
classical vein. I thought that this is gonna be a sad song – nuance wise – but when it
reaches the chorus, it does not sound that way… The interlude part explores a light
orchestra arrangements dominated by cello and electric piano. Oh, what a great
arrangement!

Dance of Mr. Gumble brings the music in a very fast tempo again
with excellent keyboard and guitar works, composed neatly, performed flawlessly. The
keyboard sound provides a symphonic nuance but with sort of soft musical riffs. The
guitar solo is stunning, even though it’s not a long one. It’s an excellent instrumental
piece.

Wake Up show-casts how the band plays the game again through
providing a music that makes you laugh. Yeah … it starts simply with a reggae style
man. But it’s not truly reggae as the band has included orchestral arrangements as
well. The interlude features guitar solo with a different rhythm section that sometimes
gives me surprise such as sudden change to a quiet passage with short bass guitar
solo.

Manipulator is probably the most symphonic as far as opening
part. What a surprises me is then a guitar riffs followed with a powerful vocal tone. This
track has a variety of melodies whereby sometime the music turns mellow with melodic
vocal line backed with violin, and sometimes having heavy riffs. It’s so dynamic as far
as composition. I cannot picture precisely on how great the composition of this song.
Top notch and very original! I cannot identify any influence by other band.

A Loaded Situation explores dynamic keyboard solo in fast speed
with technical capability at its best. The music suddenly change to another form with
great combination of guitar, bass, drum and keyboard. Another great instrumental
piece in a very discrete structure but it produces an awesome music. I love it man ….

The Observer opens with a short choir recorded in a sound effects
mode. The music flows in an upbeat tempo with an uplifting mood. Vocal plays important
role where the vocalist sings in his full swing that able to bring the music dynamically. It
has powerful keyboard solo and great symphony at the back.

The Cause is a fast tempo music with a combination of distanced
singing style. The mood is still uplifting especially during chorus with backing vocals. This
is probably the simplest form of ACT music as the composition is less complex than the
others.

The Effect has different singing style; it’s performed in low register
notes accompanied by a nice cello works augmented with piano. The chorus brings the
vocal line into a higher register notes. Light orchestra is inserted in between segments.
The nice thing is that in some segments the lyrical part has a very catchy melody.

Summary is a very powerful song with great composition whereby
it contains fast tempo music and melodic singing during mellow passage with excellent
violin / cello. It sounds like ACT music has a very dynamic styles whereby tempo
changes happen frequently and in an unpredictable way. For example is the inclusion of
wonderful keyboard solo in the middle of the track that happens suddenly beyond my
anticipation. Well, it’s hard to say it but it’s better if you buy the CD and find your own
words to best describe this song’s composition. Wonderfully crafted man!

Outro comprises melodic light orchestra with a short lyrics “Now
you’ve heard a tale been told. It’s up to you, could this be true”.

One thing for sure that it’s true: this is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED album. Full five stars
rating (because I cannot go higher than five!). The production and sonic quality are
great. It’s truly a masterpiece. Keep on proGGin’ ..!!!

Yours progressively,

GW

N.B. ***  Hey, don’t you realize? Sweden has produced so many talented
musicians in progressive arena. I think Sweden has become the land of progressive
music in this millenium. It’s no longer England, I think. Or, simply put: It was invented in
England, but it has grown significantly in Sweden. Probably Sweden is the highest in
number of progheads per capita in the world. What do you think? ***

Marillion “Misplaced Childhood” by Imoeng

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

Friends, I post here an excellent review by Imoeng (Timur Imam Nugroho). I met Imoeng for the first time in

Singapore

during Dream Theater concert and of course I always remember that "historical" day: 27 January 2006. I did not know Imoeng before that show but since we used the same t shirt "When Dream Theater and

Indonesia

Unite?" then we introduced each other. He is now in

Melbourne

and I am in

Jakarta

but we communicate every day through mobile SMS. I kept mentioning Imoeng that MARILLION is a great band and he had to have Misplaced Childhood album. He followed what I advised and he was so amazed with the album. So, his prog horizon has expanded to areas not only limited to progressive metal but starts to enter symphonin prog. This is his review at www.progarchives.com. Enjoy! —– Gatot Widayanto

5 stars Misplaced ChildhoodMisplaced_1

Brilliant, a truly masterpiece

Well I’m not going to pretend, this is my first Marillion’s album and I just bought it two weeks ago. There are lots of story behind it (buying the CD) actually, firstly, a friend of mine, Gatot is his name, which is a member here : ) always talk about Marillion’s Misplaced Childhood. Moreover, his picture on progarchives is this album’s CD cover. This really makes me think that the album is reaaaaaaaly good, possibly too good. Another thing is that when I listened to a song from Misplaced Childhood on this site, Childhood. Ends ?. It was when I realized how great is this album (well, at that time, just a song actually) and also because its somewhat similar to Dream Theater’s Take Away My Pain.

Alright, back to the album. Based on my research, this album is Marillion’s most successful album, very commercial if you would like to say that. It was released in 1985, but the one that I bought was the remastered edition, in 2002, but I’m pretty sure the songs have no different whatsoever. This album was also Marillion’s first concept album, the story was about a lost love and childhood. Also, just like many other prog albums, the cover is really great, just like the one on progarchives, but there is another side, so its just a half of the cover. Now lets go through each song.

Pseudo Silk Kimono – “Huddled in the safety of a pseudo silk kimono wearing bracelets of smoke, naked of understanding…”, that is the first line of the song. The intro is really calming and peaceful with deep bass line. For me, this song is just the beginning of the long epic, the album itself which is considered as a long song.

Kayleigh – Just a short story. When I listened this song for the first time, I didn’t realize that this song is ultimately famous, until the “do you remember…” I felt so, I don’t know, so strange, because my dad always play this song and sang loudly in the car. Well at that time, I wasn’t into progrock, so I just closed my ears. Again, I researched about this song, and I know that Kayleigh, well, it was Kay Lee actually, whose dated with Fish. Also, if you look at the lyrics, the song is more about love breaking. The song starts off with the same style from Pseudo Silk Kimono, but this time, its more “groovy” with nice bass guitar and drum combination. The composition is just like a typical song, verse, chorus then verse followed by another chorus.

Lavender – Ahh, I really love this song but its hard to choose which one is my favorite, simply because all the songs, without exception, are extremely great. “I was walking in the park dreaming of a spark…” with a calm piano sound and cool drum line. When it hits the chorus, the mood increases but somewhat the song still, like, calms the heart (well, calms my heart). Also, the guitar solo is quite simple, yet profound, really suits the song.

Bitter Suite – Sorry about this, but somehow I like to relate certain songs to Dream Theater songs : ) This one is really like Dream Theater’s Trial Of Tears with cool drum lines and nice ambience at the beginning of the song. The song itself was divided into five. The first part is just a non-melodic vocal, if you know what I mean, that Fish was like just read the lyrics. The best part for me is Blue Angle, where the piano and guitar lines really great along with cool bass and drum and I reckon is the most melodic and touching part of the song. “I can hear your heart, hear your heart…”, really great that I feel like in my own heaven. This part ends with a melody like the one in Dream Theater’s Octavarium (sorry again!!).

Heart Of Lothian – The intro is just amazing, really great yet very progressive. You can tell from the drum beat and guitar melody along “wide boys, wide boys, wide boys, born with hearts of Lothian…” The next verse was played along with nice guitar melody and deep drum lines. The climax of the song, for me is at the end of the first part, Wide Boy, “I was born with the heart of Lothian…”. While the second part is somewhat very calm and quite with a nice ambience from the keyboard

Waterhole – The song is very dynamic and very rockish. One thing is that, the second verse or maybe you consider this as the chorus, really surprised me, “… when you think its time to go, don’t be surprised, …” they way that he sang that line is just very “progressive”. The last 4 second of the song, the guitar melody and beat changes, possibly for the intro of the next song.

Lords Of Backstage – This is also a song that Om Gatot (well I called him like that) always talk about, its the “I just want you to be the first one…” part. The song is somewhat very short and is the introduction of the next song. The duration of the song is just nearly two minutes.

Blind Curve – ARHH!! This album really means everything to me, since probably this is the most beautiful album I’ve had so far (well, one of the most beautiful). Right now, I’m listening to the album and this song really is the, uh, I don’t know, its like the point of all. The intro is just amazing, cool but has very deep feeling. At the second minute, the which is the third part, the song composition is just great, very amazing, again, simple yet profound with very good vocal style. “So I talked about conscience and I talked about pain, and he looked out the window and it started to rain…”, simply amazing. Again, I want to compare this to Octavarium, that the fourth part, is somewhat like Octavarium’s fourth part (I just realized that it’s the same part!!). The vocal style is like reading a poem, without any melodic with dark and deep drum line. Slowly, the energy increases, “… the childhood, the childhood, the childhood, oh please give it back to me…” then the music “breaks” and the mood really goes up, AMAZING!! The last part is just as amazing as the other parts, really beautiful. The last guitar solo is very great, simple but great, very touching and followed by the next song.

Childhoods End ? – Yet, my favorite (well its not my “real favorite”, I just often play this song in the toilet every hour when I’m at school) song. The song starts off with cool muted guitar line and groovy drum and keyboard. The best part is the bass lines, which very jazzy groovy, well, very neo-progressive, that every I played this song using my IPod, I always push the earphone deep to my ears so I can hear the bass lines. There are two different guitar sound, distortion and nice “funk” clean style. Again,, when I compared to Dream Theater, this song is really similar to Take Away My Pain, and the guitar part is the main similarity.

White Feather – A really great song to ends the album, really energetic and dynamic. In my opinion, the song should ends in with fixed ending, not faded out. However, I still couldn’t find the relation between the story and this song since this song is more like some unity stuff.

Well, in the end, what more can I say. This is my first Marillion’s album, first neo- progressive, and someone introduced this album to me. But I never felt like this, I never enjoyed such an album although I just bought it few hours before I started to love the songs. Without any hesitation, five giant stars.

Keep On Proggin’ In The Free World!!!

King Crimson “The Power To Believe”

5 stars An Absolute Masterpiece!

Let me make simple words about this album: amazing and kicking! It’s true, I tell you. And I Kc_power_to_believe recommend you for not reading my words after this sentence because it’s useless; just switch to any CD vendor site on the net and click this album. You won’t regret, believe me! Now, if you still continue reading this line, I thank you very much even though I don’t recommend you doing so because the following sentences are merely my expression about how this album stirs my emotion, pumping up my spirit to rock and of course … to work effectively!

Having been vacuum for approximately three years, switching from grandiose double-trio concept to four-piece line-up, the band still could produce such a great album like “The Power To Believe” which has pushed forward their music boundary but still maintaining the core music of “Discipline” album (the first of the band’s effort with new format when Fripp brought in Adrian Belew to join his force in King Crimson). And now, Belew is the second longest serving member after Fripp – the founder. The key of new King Crimson sound since “Discipline” was basically repeated chords / notes overlaid by another instrument work / sound effects (coming out from Fripp’s guitar synthesizer or drums) to enrich the textures. At first listen I felt bored but it grew on me and I get used to this kind of style and it has become King Crimson trademark.

The album kick off elegantly with a cappella by Belew in a very short period but it’s strategically important to set the tone of the overall album. For this, the a cappella serves its purpose wonderfully and I mean it: whenever I play this album I cannot start somewhere in the middle of the CD – I got to start from the short opening: “The Power To Believe I” even though it’s less than 1 minute in duration. This is where I put my two thumbs UP for this album. It’s truly a brilliant opener! When “Level Five” blows from my speaker set it really kills me right away because the sound is truly powerful with great sonic quality and wide soundspace dynamics. Anyone would appreciate that this track is a true masterpiece because the composition, the mixing and the production of sounds are top notch! The combined sound resulting from guitar, bass and drums are excellent. I guess Trey Gunn uses his rubber bass combined with Warr guitar right here. Pat Mastelotto also creates his dazzling drum work magnificently. Overall it’s a great instrumental track.

Belew’s lyrics now seem to be much well positioned at the third track ”Eyes Wide Open”’ where the music is presented in relatively slow tempo with great harmonies. By definition this track is very much accessible with some segment reminds me to “One Time” of “Thrak” album. “Elektrik” is another instrumental work with repeated chords combining multi guitars (Fripp, Belew, Gunn) and dynamic drumming. Fripp provides synthesizer role with his guitar.

“Facts of Life” (incl. intro) brings the music into heavier style with metal influenced riffs. The track contains lyrics and powerful singing by Belew “No body knows what happen when we die…!!!” The structure of the music is varied combining medium tempo and complex music. It’s a rocking track and it stirs the emotion when I listen to it. It’s a very unique style by King Crimson. “The Power To Believe II” starts off in an ambient mood with multi instruments work emphasizing tight bass lines, guitar synthesizer and it suddenly brings the “gamelan” sounds. (Hey, come on Indonesian guys! If you are Indonesians whether or not you like prog music, you must own this album! You must be proud that King Crimson has created a composition where the pentatonic sounds of gamelan are brought in wonderfully here! Bravo King Crimson!). A cappella in the melody of first track inserts nicely in the middle of the gamelan textures followed with synthesizer (produced from Fripp’s guitar) and brings the music symphonically. However, the overall picture of the music gives me a sense of avant garde than a symphonic one. It’s truly a great track and it’s probably the best track – not that the fact I’m Indonesian, but I truly love the nuance created by this song. It’s so cool ……

“Dangerous Curve” starts in a very silent mode (almost unheard at all) and slowly the music moves in crescendo with repeated riffs of bass guitar, dazzling drums backed with synthesizer sounds. It reminds me to the “Lark’s Tongue in Aspic” style. This song is best suited in the middle of the night. I fully enjoy how Pat plays his drum set which semms to serve as melody of the song while other instruments play repeated chords. The magic of this song: I don’t get bored even though the rhythm section is repeated. It then flows almost seamlessly to “Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With” in rockin’ style. It’s relatively an accessible song, I would say.

Belew’s a cappella is then repeated at “The Power To Believe III” which sounds like an avant-garde music with unpredictable drum work and soaring guitar sounds. The music then flows into more regular rhythm section and it’s still demonstrating the dynamic drumming and excellent bass guitar. The album concludes with “The Power To Believe IV” which contains “Industry” (from “Three of A Perfect Pair” album) style interjected with Belew’s a cappella as coda and ends the album beautifully. This is best suited for midnight enjoyment. Wonderful!

Overall, I’m glad that having been 35 years in prog music business, King Crimson can still create a beautifully crafted album. The album is strong in almost every aspect of great music: excellent melody, great harmonies, tight composition and excellent overall performance. The band members are talented musicians who know how to compose great music and at the same time stir the emotion of the listeners. Long live King Crimson! Overall rating is full five stars – and I cannot compromise on this as it’s got to be five. Keep on proggin’ ..!

Peace on earth and mercy mild – GW, Indonesia.
